As a youngster, while attempting to emulate his two older brothers, both of whom could be described as “sports nuts,” Salerni, at age 8 or 9, fell in love with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers.  This love affair has intensified over the years.


Currently, Salerni and his lovely wife, Marti, reside in Bradenton, Florida, not far from Pirate City, the spring-training site of the Pirates.

Oreste LeRoy Salerni, the youngest son of Italian immigrants was born in Bolivar, Pennsylvania, a small town, population 800, in Western Pennsylvania approximately 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.  He received his BS (Pharmacy) and MS degrees (Medicinal Chemistry) from Duquesne University and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago (Medicinal Chemistry).  He was employed as Senior Organic Chemist at Midwest Research Institute, Kansas City, Missouri, for 6 ½ years and as Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Indianapolis, for 36 years.  While at Butler University he was awarded numerous Professor of the Year awards by his students, and was also elected to deliver the commencement address.
